The largest of the Borderlands. The sign of Saldaea is three silver fish on a field of dark blue. Three major regions of Saldaea are Bashere, Tyr and Sidona. The nation of Saldaea was formed early in the War of the Hundred Years. The governors of Hawkwing's five northern provinces met and agreed to form stable nations to preserve the peace and defend against the Blight. Rylen t'Boriden Rashad was the first King of Saldaea. Saldaea is in the northwest of the Westlands. Saldaea is ruled by Queen Tenobia. Her Marshal-General is her uncle Davram Bashere. Her full title is Her Illumined Majesty, Tenobia si Bashere Kazadi, Shield of the North and Sword of the Blightborder, High Seat of House Kazadi, Lady of Shahayni, Asnelle, Kunwar and Ganai. As with most nations of the Westlands, there are numerous strong noble Houses that wield influence.

In a previous statement I believe you had basically said that the action of the series would take place in the Lands known to Rand and his friends i.e. not Shara or Seanchan and yet the new book has alot of stuff about those lands--have you changed your mind? Is action in either of these two lands a possibility now?
No. Except for the possible occasional divergence, except for Rand's excursions to Seanchan when he chased after Aviendha. I was willing to put as much as I did into the the guide because I will not be using those things in the books in the same way that I used Kandor or Saldaea.

What cultures and societies did you base Saldaea on? And <nervous grin>, is the sa'sara supposed to be a sort of belly-dance? <duck>
Saldaea is based, in part, on a number of middle eastern cultures and several cultures in countries surrounding the Black Sea. In part. The sa'sara, now...you'll need a certificate from your doctor, a note from your mother and a certificate of health for whoever you intend to dance it for before I can give you any more information beside the name.
